Skyrobics – How to Exercise on Trampolines

I’ve had a lot of people contact me and ask me about Skyrobics, a workout class I often mention on Twitter and Instagram. If you didn’t catch my first post about it, you can read it here. I know this may seem like an odd thing to talk about on my travel blog, but I’m a big supporter of fitness on the road. Sky Zone is a franchise throughout the US, so if you are traveling within the United States, you may very well be near one of these massive trampoline courts. Check out their site to see if you can take a class!

Skyrobics is an aerobics class on a giant trampoline court. It’s even more awesome than it sounds. I started taking classes 1-2 times a week at the end of November. I have been tracking my calories burned per one hour class.

The result? An average of 554 calories per hour

That’s not bad at all considering I get to play around on trampolines. My best class actually topped out at a whopping 628 calories.

628 calories

And just to be clear – I’m not the only one who can burn that many calories. My 56 year old mother comes with me at least twice a month. I tracked her calories as well and she burns an average of 450. Sure, it’s not as much as me, but that’s only because she goes less often and hasn’t mastered her rouncing skills yet. That’s still a pretty great average.

What makes it so effective?

The trampolines, of course. Exercise on a trampoline is 68% more effective than doing the same workouts on a hard surface. A lot of what we do in class are moves you are most likely familiar with – side shuffles, high knees, jumping jacks, bunny hops, plank pose, etc. They are just much more difficult (and thus effective) due to the extra effort you have to put into keeping your body balanced on a trampoline. One thing that was completely new to me was Rouncing. I have tried to explain what this is to people many times, but the best way to explain it is just to show you:

Try it!

I wish all of you could come visit me in St. Louis and we could enjoy the classes together, but if you cannot, there may be a Sky Zone near you or near somewhere you plan to visit. It’s a great way to trick yourself into being healthy while you travel!
