Medalla: Puerto Rican Beer
Although Puerto Rico is better known for its rum, that doesn’t mean its the only alcohol being consumed on the island. During my time there I drank a myriad of things, mostly while hanging out with Pedro’s mom. While I do love a good rum and pineapple, I tend to lean more towards beer while hanging out on the beach or eating a meal. And for that, there is Medalla.
So what’s Medalla like?
I’m going to be completely honest with you – there isn’t anything all that special about Medalla. When I am home in St. Louis, I tend to get a bit snobbish about my beer and ask for microbrews keep away from things like Bud Light. However, there is something about Medalla that just pairs perfectly with the laid back feel of a day at the beach. Medalla Light is a simple, light beer that doesn’t really get in the way of the taste of your food. It’s light enough to chug, should you feel so inclined. Finishing a six pack of Medalla while lounging in the sun is not problem at all.
It’s a Puerto Rican staple
Perhaps its appeal comes from the fact that you can’t really get it outside of Puerto Rico, although they are now shipping some to a few cities in Florida. It might just be a tradition, much like Budweiser products are here in St. Louis. Either way, if you are in Puerto Rico, you have to have at least one Medalla.
