Would You Eat Grasshoppers?
For you, eating grasshoppers may sound disgusting, but the people of the Oaxaca region of Mexico eat grasshoppers all the time! I like to consider myself mildly adventurous when it comes to food, as long as it isn’t strange animal parts, so when when I got a chance to try the local delicacy in Huatulco, Mexico with Apple Vacations, I was pretty excited.
Don’t worry, the grasshoppers are cooked
The grasshoppers are roasted before put into any food, so you won’t need to worry about the critters squirming around in your hands or mouth. From a distance, you’d think they were just some dried peppers or maybe some spice, but up close, all their little insect parts become very clear.
While you can eat them straight, you won’t find many people just shoveling them in their mouth like popcorn. I tried a couple plain, just for kicks. It wasn’t gross, but it wasn’t particularly satisfying either. However, once I added them to a quesadilla or taco, I actually thought they made a tasty addition.
I actually enjoyed them enough to purchase a couple of jars of them to bring back. I popped them into some tacos I made for my boyfriend and I without thinking twice. What about you, would you be willing to eat grasshoppers?
