My favorite night in Iceland: Mjóeyri

During the Highlights of Iceland tour, Dani and I stayed at a different farm house almost every single night. While all of them had their own charm, I completely fell in love with Mjóeyri. As we listened to our GPS tell us to keep driving, I saw these adorable cottages off in the distance and said, “Aw, man, I wish we were staying there!” Dani checked the GPS and said, “Rease, I think we are staying there!”

I was beyond excited. Turns out the little red cottages in the photo were one story, but Dani and I were placed in a 2 story cottage that included a small kitchen, bathroom, and living room on the bottom floor and 2 tiny bedrooms on the top floor. The house was basically a giant bunk bed and I loved it.

That ladder leads to the bedrooms. Its like a clubhouse! So much childlike joy!

Perfect place to relax.

Hot meal and a hot tub

Dani and I ate pretty much nothing but yogurt and cold cheese sandwiches for our week-long road trip, so cooking a hot pasta dish in our kitchen felt so luxurious. Of course, before we ate, we had to check out the hot tub.

The best hot tub ever.

The best hot tub ever.

Oh yes, that is in fact a hot tub in an old boat, overlooking a gorgeous lake in Iceland. Dani and I grabbed some beers and hopped in. Turns out drinking in hot tubs is kind of Dani and I’s thing, we did it when we were in Whistler, Canada and we ended up doing it again later on this trip. What can I say, it’s a great way to relax after traveling.

No wifi? No problem.

Mjóeyri is usually wifi-equipped, but on the night we stayed, the internet ended up being pretty shaky. Honestly, every time I was able to connect to the internet in any farm house in Iceland I was amazed because I have no idea how they get any signal at all in these remote places. The point is, this place was so incredible that even I, a blogger addicted to the internet, didn’t really mind the shaky signal. Who needs internet when you have your own little clubhouse with views of mountains and lakes in Iceland?

The perfect home away from home

This cozy little cottage was such a perfect little home for the night. The owner was incredibly friendly and offered to come wake us up if the Northern Lights appeared, as they often shine brightly over the lake. She also mentioned that whales often play in the water and that only 1 day before our arrival a rescue organization had come to adopt the fox that had been hanging around the property and had become besties with her dog. It was like I was in a freaking Disney movie guys. I half expected little birds to help me get dressed in the morning.

After I watched a gorgeous sunset over the water, I worked on some writing and impatiently awaited the Northern Lights, which didn’t end up appearing that night. However, I was able to entertain myself on the comfy couch, thumbing through awesome Icelandic books for kids and adults that were thoughtfully left in the living room.

In the morning, we went to the main house for a typical Icelandic breakfast. Mjóeyri offered the usual fare: hard boiled eggs, cold cuts, bread, and cheese. The true treat? Freshly made waffles! IMG_7122

Honestly, I never wanted to leave this place. I wanted to hunker down here for a month and just write a novel. I fantasized about sipping coffee every morning, watching the sunrise then typing out several chapters while I watched the whales play before climbing up my clubhouse ladder to take a little afternoon nap. Alas, the rest of Iceland’s Ring Road awaited me, so I moved on. Of course, if I ever make it back to Iceland, I will certainly have to stop by my favorite little cottage again.

Have you ever stayed somewhere during your travels that you loved this much? Tell me about it!
