San Francisco is the Anti-Cancer
In my article, 5 Ways San Francisco Stole My Heart, I highlighted a lot of things I loved about this California city, including things such as food and the healthy lifestyle. Ever since my trip, I have bemoaned the unhealthiness of America, because San Francisco totally spoiled me. Living in the US, I feel as if I am battling health issues just by being alive in the country.
Seriously, is there anything that won’t possibly give you cancer?
Let’s just forget about environmental factors for now and just focus on the things with do to our bodies and consume. America has processed food and beverages so heavily that every time I take a bite of something I feel like I am inevitably causing some sort of irreparable damage to some vital organ. That’s freaking stressful. This girl needs to eat and I don’t want to think about my inevitable demise every freaking time I eat a taco.
The magical land of San Francisco
San Francisco is like a magical, healthy city that has created a shield of friendly hippies around the city to block out all the impurities in America. In San Francisco, my fears of cancer, chemically engineered food, and processed ingredients were washed away. It was almost comical how easy it was to know where food came from. It always felt like everyone was pedaling the goods of someone who sits around in their all-natural hut making granola and doing yoga.
No but seriously, San Franciscans know how to make some damn good granola. I even brought some home.
In the mood for a green smoothie? No problem, just hit up Yelp and you’ll find 5 places a short bike ride away. Incidentally, San Franciscans are also obsessed with Yelp, so you’ll probably find a ton of reviews as well, all praising how the spinach is plucked from a nearby garden and their milk is only taken from cows who live a better life than you do.
Beauty products and health routines that make sense
I can’t even pronounce most of the shit that is used to make soap and moisturizers. In San Francisco, people are just whipping up kick-ass soap, moisturizers, shampoos, and whatever else and most of it is amazing.
San Franciscans also put a really large focus on keeping your body in motion. Of course they walk those massive hills every day, but they love things like yoga so much that they have a freaking yoga room in the airport. Plus, with all the bike lanes and public parks, the city just makes it so easy to stay active.
Healthy but not snobby
Sometimes I meet people who are almost pretentious about how healthy they are. They’ll brag about their wheat grass and how they spend $100 a week on getting an aura massage (seriously, guys, Aura Massages are a freaking thing) and then look at you like a diseased street rat if you eat a burrito. I saw no such snobbery in San Francisco, especially when it comes to burritos, which they are obsessed with.
San Franciscans genuinely enjoy being healthy, but they also truly and deeply love food. They do not deprive themselves of flavor, nor do they starve themselves for the sake of fashion. They honestly just believe in a healthier, cleaner way of living. Sure, it’s a bit comical that everyone does yoga and personally knows the person who makes their soap, but isn’t it also kind of amazing? San Francisco was oddly enchanting for me, as if the city itself energized me. I did so much in 8 days that it felt more like a couple of weeks. I honestly think it had something to do with the food, the products, and the energy of the people.
So if you’re looking for an energizing, anti-cancer, San Francisco is definitely for you.
