Cafe con Leche: Cuban Food in New York City
New York City has so much to offer in the world of food that it can be completely overwhelming. Even if you can narrow your desires down to a certain cuisine, you are bound to have hundreds of options. For someone as indecisive as me, that can be a real issues, especially considering how crabby I get when hungry.
However, one night Pedro and I decided to wing it. We headed to Amsterdam Avenue, which is full of restaurants, and set off to simply browse the menus. As we ping-ponged back and forth from one side of the street to another, reading menus and shaking our heads no, our resolve started to wither. We were just about to compromise for any old burger joint or a slice of pizza when we spotted Cafe con Leche
Pedro is Puerto Rican, and I love basically any cuisine that is heavily centered on rice and beans, so Cuban food sounded absolutely amazing.
Oh, and it was
We took a seta outside and started scouring the menu. For some odd reason, they were having a “Mexican Night” so all of their specials were things like enchiladas and tacos, but I wasn’t having it. I finally settled on garlic shrimp cooked with red peppers with three sides: rice, beans, and tostones.
As you can see, we ordered quite a bit a food. This doesn’t even show the extra side of tostones, 2 sodas, and 2 tasty iced Cuban coffees to go. Our grand total? Only $41 bucks. For 2 entrees, a couple extra sides, and 4 drinks, that’s a pretty great price in New York. This was by far my favorite stumbled-upon restaurant we found during our trip.
